| Misconceptions of Autism | |
| Misguided by the media , most people have wrongly identified Autism with ingenuity , powerful memory or musical talent . Actually, people with such abilities, ie. the Asperger¡¦s Geek cases , are no more than 3% of the autistic population .
Autism is caused by neuro-defects hampering the victims¡¦ learning, communicative , speech , cognitive , sensory and interpersonal skills . Though they look normal , only one-third have normal intelligence while the rest have below average intelligence or mild mental handicap . More than half have no verbal ability . Due to their cognitive impairment , they also tend to be slow learners . |
|
| Parents' Struggling | |
| It took most parents a long time to accept the diagnosis, going through hard struggle , denial , deluding themselves with false hopes that the queer behaviour would gradually wear out and a¡¥ genius ¡¦would emerge while harsh reality and disillusionment bring guilt , self-blame , even the desire to give up . | |
| Why Home Training ? | |
| There are diverse schools of thought and treatment methods for autism , most of which carried out in special schools and centres . But the technical terminology involved have caused parents to think that only¡¥ experts ¡¦can help their children . Such classic theories could be simplified and applied in the teaching of the children . After years of practice and subsequent revisions , Louis Program offers simple , practical ways for the training for autistic/mentally impaired children to be carried out by parents or others .
Currently , the people involved in helping autistic children include medical specialists , nurses , paediatricians , clinical psychologists , occupational and speech therapists , teachers and social workers at special schools . As their specialisms differ , not many can offer comprehensive training . Due to limited resources , neither can they provide training continuously on a daily basis ¡V all the more reason for early home training so that each autistic child can benefit from proper teaching and nurturing . |
|
| Who could best teach the autistic ? | |
| The improvement to be made by individuals hinges on each's ability , some reports say that only a small number of high-function autistic people can finish university , get a job and lead an independent life . Yet , we believe God makes everyone unique . Each can make improvement in cognition , self - care and social skills through love and guidance from others .
In fact , many studies around the world have pointed to the effectiveness of one-to-one training and early intervention . There is no better choice than a well - structured , systematic program involving one-to-one daily training by parents themselves . |
